Yes, negligent I’ve been… greatest apologies.  As many of you know, there are a variety of efforts in play to get residents together and talking about the upcoming Board elections, growing quorum, touring the new lobby design proposals, pushing for bike racks on campus, resolving electric submeter concerns, etc etc etc.  In an attempt to reign them all in and yet continue them all by allowing for freedom of expression while leveraging social networking tools, I’d like to introduce you to Ning.

A small band of us created this online community, much like facebook but with some cool additional functionalities like private discussion threads, individual profiles, forums, event calendars, etc – all specific and limited to Clinton Hill residents.

Interested in checking this out? I’ll be slowly migrating the blog (including old posts) to Ning. If you live at Clinton Hill Co-Ops and are seeking an invitation, please let me know. If you are already a password-carrying chaocblog holder, I’ll drop you an invite anyway.

For those of you not living in the buildings for the “tests” for the new lobby design, here are the current options.  The photo is of the 4 color swatches (yes, all green!) for the vestibule and hallway.  Keep in mind the doors and fixtures have all been painted a shiny dark black and the wallpaper are small, thin stripes of varying shades of green.  If you want to see the paint swatches in person, you can enter the vestibules of 355 and 210, but keep in mind you are viewing these in a large, sun-lit space and the colors look very different in narrow, florecent lit hallways…

If you have comments or feedback that you would like to provide to the Board, which makes the decisions (I still haven’t found out who on the Board is the “lobby committee” so if you know, please let us know), you can email or call the management office or you can submit a comment card (assuming you have a comment box in your lobby).

Real Estate Agent, Resident, and CHAOC Board Vice President, Elaine Cooper, is also the CHAOC landscaping committee and has been directing the campus springtime gardening. The impatients are in, the shrubs are pruned, and dirt patches resulting from building maintenance are being reseeded.  I really enjoy stepping into the courtyard with all its greenery.  I hope, however, that we are saving the tulip bulbs and other long-lasting and costly flowers so that year over year we are not incurring new expenses without including the past ones (plus, what a great way to build fuller flower beds!)

Residents at the last meeting raised a desire, once again, to participate in the co-op committees. No news yet, but what do you think? (Green) thumb up or down?

If you or someone you know is elderly, handicap or otherwise impaired from walking the stairs in the building, you can voluntarily leave a name and apartment number with the security office (and management office).  In case of emergencies - for example, a black out as we head into the summer – the security office can have this information on hand for themselves and to provide the police, fire, or other emergency service providers.

Last night was the 5th Resident Council meeting led by the new CHAOC Board.  This also marked our annual security meeting, where representatives from both the NYPD’s 88th precinct and the CHAOC Command Security Corp provided updates and fielded questions from residents in attendance.

Our precinct’s commanding officer, Captain Anthony Tasso addressed residents and provided a “compstat” sheet highlighting neighborhood trends in a variety of crime categories.  Good news for all residents is that from last year to this year-to-date, overall incidents are down 16+%, however and maybe not so surprising in a downturned economy, burglaries are up almost 15%.  In a ten year comparison, incidents are down over 18% but grand larceny (car theft) is up over 120%!  If you are a resident with a vehicle, be sure hide or remove valuables and secure your vehicle.

There was a notice a few weeks ago regarding a series of burglaries in the co-ops, specifically on the south campus.  These are still under investigation and the perpetrator has not been identified, and fortunately there have not been any recent cases.  Please keep in mind that at the time there was work being done on the exterior of the building, so although nothing has been formally correlated, I remind everyone to shut and lock their windows if there are contractors working on your building while you are not home.

John Chesney, owner of Command Security Corp, and Steve Barrett, the CHAOC account manager provided residents in attendance with a draft of an action plan to address concerns raised by shareholders.  Among these commitments, CSC has already retrained the security staff on duties and responsibilities here at the co-ops (ex. calling residents on the north campus when visitors arrive and addressing residents complaints as a priority over finishing routine building patrols).

One resident asked what she can and can not expect from on-campus security officers.  The room was reminded that the officers must maintain a log of all issues and resolutions, are responsible for calling 911 in appropriate situations, are not empowered to make arrests, when in uniform and are not to be smoking on campus, should have a visible name badge, conducting 2 to 3 building verticle security checks in each 8 hour shift, and have 1 person in the security booth at all times.  If you see any security officers violating these responsibilities, first call security and ask to speak with field supervisor Sebastion Worthy.  If Mr. Worthy is unavailable or unresponsive, please notify Steve Barrett at 212-943-0500.

Please check back tomorrow for additional notes from the RC meeting!
